Web Design
Content + Appearance = Website.
Content
In real estate they say the three most important things are "Location, Location, Location!" When it comes to websites, we say the three most important things are "Content, Content, Content!" The text and images used to convey the message of a website make up the content. Users visit sites primarily, if not exclusively, for their content. The top search engine rankings are given to useful, information-rich sites, with pages that clearly and accurately describe the content.
If a website doesn't contain useful and compelling content, nothing in a web designer's bag of tricks can save it from Internet oblivion.
Many of our clients, especially small or start-up businesses, choose to handle the copywriting themselves. We think that's great. After all, who knows more about your business than you do. In fact, we can steer you towards a number of resources to help get those creative juices flowing. Here's a good one to get you started: Writing for the web.
Appearance
The colors, fonts, text size, site navigation, and content placement are all functions of appearance. At Moondog Web Design we use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to handle most of the appearance functions, and write the content in W3C web standards compliant HTML code. We do this because it produces fast-loading sites that are readable in all modern browsers. The majority of all internet users are still on slow dial-up internet connections, and if a site takes too long to load, they will leave and never return.
Some people think a web site needs flashy graphics and scrolling text in order to capture a visitor's attention. Numerous studies show that is simply not true. Here's what visitors really want:
- relevant and usable content
- easy site navigation
- pages that load quickly
With that in mind, we ensure that every site we create is well formed, fast loading, and easy to navigate.
